And now more about:
WEST HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
http://www.whiff2008.com
The West Hollywood International Film Festival (WHIFF), in its inaugural year, is soon to be West Hollywood's premier festival destination. Filmmaking, by nature, is an intensely collaborative, creative, and communicated art form. It takes a diverse range of personalities and talent to see a film to completion. Filmmaking is a dream of many around the planet, regardless of race, nationality, color or language. Filmmaking transcends and seeks to eliminate the barriers of society.
What started as a local industry in Southern California emerging from a new and exciting technology that captured motion on film, has blossomed into a worldwide interconnected web of positive collaboration. WHIFF is a celebration of our shrinking global village. Visually, film speaks in all languages, to all people, of all ages. Film shows us who we are as a global culture, what goals we share, what triumphs we have together, and the tragedies we stoically face.
WHIFF is here to celebrate that triumphant rise of Hollywood as a leader in filmmaking, its influence on filmmaking around the world, and now, with WHIFF, its celebratory return to the stage that made it famous. By bringing filmmakers and their films from around the world to West Hollywood, the WHIFF shows its support and dedication to the world being created all around us, an increasingly connected world.

WHATEVER’S HAPPENING ISSUE 7
At writing, we received some sad news. David Carradine passed on June 4, 2009. David was a great talent and wonderful, kind man. We send our deep condolences to his family and join with his fans in remembering his body of work. Reprinted below is Scott Peake’s letter of memories from the set.
***************************************************
A LETTER FROM SCOTT PEAKE
***************************************************
I was deeply saddened today to learn that David Carradine had died in Bangkok last night. David was in Thailand working on his latest film, Stretch. Not much else is known right now. As you all know, I had the pleasure to work with David on Permanent Vacation. What an amazing experience. Being a veteran of well over 100 movies I was pleasantly shocked when he agreed to do our movie.
When I first met David was at the production office and he came in, kicked off his shoes and sat down in the chair lotus style. We talked about 2 hours. Actually I mostly listen for two hours. He was a great storyteller and never at a loss with a story. I think we ended up talking for about 15 minutes about Permanent Vacation. I gave him the script and he said he would read it and get back to me. When he left I thought that was so cool getting to meet David Carradine and thought that it was a long shot. Then he called a couple of days later and said he was in. WOW. I couldn't believe it.
Flash forward to Milton, Florida and my first day directing David. I was so nervous. I soon found you don't so much direct David as you tell him the blocking and then sit back and watch in amazement at his ability. After the first take my nervousness was gone and David being the professional that he is, listen to my comments and gave me what I wanted for the next take.
We were doing the scene where David is talking to Frank Harper on a walk. They are walking toward the camera. David stops in mid sentence and sees the lawn bowlers in the distance and takes off running past the camera. Then I told David that I wanted to get a reverse shot of them running away from the camera. He looked at me, gave me that sheepish smile and said, "I am 68 years old I can only run that a couple of times but I do what you want. But just know that you will never use that shot." I smiled back and said, "Yea probably but can we get it anyway?" He obliged me. I truly thought I was going to use that shot. Of course he was right and I was wrong.
Just like David could tell stories all day long I could go on about the amazing time I had working with the legend. He will be missed by generations of film and television viewers all over the world. I am so fortunate to have worked with him and got to know him on a personal level. He was an incredibly talented man.
Thanks for the memories David.
Scott

THE PERFECT SUMMER FILM
***************************************************
Permanent Vacation is the perfect summer film because...
It's summertime, along with watermelon and lemonade, the flies and oppressive humidity come out. Watch the Bury's sweat! It's the perfect summer vacation, a cabin at a campground in Florida, what could be more adventurous? The family fun, your son is feral, your daughter takes up with a biker and your wife is a nymphomaniac. Black albinos love the summer sun and DEEP. Michael Bowen AND Frank Harper swing in a hammock. 5. Porch-side rocking chair philosophy.
4. Human sacrifice always best when the sun is shining.
3. Gina Bellman in lingerie.
2. Yes! There are dwarves riding motorcycles.
1. David Carradine as the Philosophizing Old Man.
***************************************************
ABOUT LAST NIGHT, OR THE ECONOMY GETTING YOU DOWN?
***************************************************
As many of you probably do, I subscribe to multiple lists, forums, groups and blogs. I really couldn't say exactly how many I am on, not including what I subscribe to on Facebook I would say 20 or so lists which result in probably 100 emails a day. I read that if you have more than 10 emails in your inbox you aren't working efficiently - does anyone have 10 or less emails in their inbox? I would like to meet that person. I suppose you would have to qualify what you use your inbox for, that is where I keep everything on my "to do" list. So much in this industry is time sensitive or I want to keep fresh for when I have spare time. I suppose I should rename my inbox, my Freshbox, I like that, DONE! Anyway, I had a little extra time on my hands this week and I actually read the emails I received, I read them all. The 80/20 Rule or Pareto's Principle (80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes), which I believe applies to everything, seems to have turned into the 90/10 rule. In fact a Harvard Business School study of 300K random Twitter users "[T]he top 10% of prolific Twitter users accounted for over 90% of tweets." Among the many examples, I read the list of films and TV shows in production on Variety and then read the network fall schedule announcements. I mean 90/10 is generous and if you aren't reality, it is closer to 99/1 that you will be picked up, successful, make money and become RICH! That was just one example but mostly what I read was about the economy and how it is affecting us all but not the 20 or the 10, not them. So, I have an idea, a round table of sorts and everyone gets a shot. The members of the 20% TEAM, I will qualify by suggesting that these are the top 20% wealthiest individuals in the US (to keep it simple), they know who they are, or at least Forbes has the list. This team creates a website that the 80% TEAM can log on to and send in a business plan, idea, suggestions, persuasive essay or anything they think will convince the 20% TEAM to make them a MEMBER. That's right, they all pitch in some of their wealth to boost the winner out of the 80% TEAM and onto the 20% TEAM but there's a catch, because there should be. The plan or essay has to include a plausible idea about how to eradicate the 80/20 rule and even the playing field. I am sure I just lost some of you and certainly the 20% TEAM wouldn't go for it. But I hope it got you thinking. Since we are the majority why can't we level the wealth, don't we always say, if I won the lottery, I would know what to do with it, but really would you? Ok, you are right you would but I got you reading our newsletter, please read on and buy the film you really will love it and it won't make you think!!
